GUIMARÃES VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTERS – HISTORY
The city of Guimarães had already had a Municipal Firefighters Company since 1788. On June 4, 1869, a large fire occurred in the center of Guimarães, which reduced several houses to ashes and caused the death of 4 people. It was after this fire in the center of the city that the idea of creating a Volunteer Fire Brigade began to develop. An application signed by some illustrious characters of the city of Guimarães and sent to the Municipality of Guimarães on December 6, 1876 provided for the request for a bomb and respective equipment with intention to begin an association called Bombeiros Voluntários de Guimarães.
Thus, on March 19, 1877, at the initiative of José Martins de Queirós Montenegro, better known as “Minotes” and 1st Commander of the Volunteer Firefighters of Guimarães, the first installations were inaugurated and this same day was established as his birthday.
The Guimarães Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters has as its main mission the protection of people and property, namely the assistance to the wounded, sick, shipwrecked and the extinction of fires, detaining and maintaining, for this purpose, a fire brigade (volunteers or mixed), in compliance with what is defined in the legal regime of fire brigades.
